The fable employs common names and places so we might ponder the real story:

Once upon a time there were two countries.  One was called Vancouver, and the other was called Island.

Now people on Island, for a variety of reasons, had grievances against the people of Vancouver, and took to lobbing missiles, mortars and rockets at them.  Now Island was not a very big place, and not very rich either, at least most of it’s citizens were not rich, but nevertheless for the past 10 years managed to find money to lob some 11,000 deadly projectiles at Vancouver.  They might have put the money to better economic use, perhaps.

Sometimes Island managed some big hits, like the one that blew bodies all over Georgia and Granville on a sunny afternoon.

Mostly the attacks did create some stress and damage but Vancouver erected a pretty sophisticated missile defence system.  Some of Vancouver’s friends said, “What!?  That’s crazy! Why spend millions on a gizmo to try and intercept attack when you are stronger and bigger and could just give Island one warning.  Stop.  We will not tolerate your attacks.  That’s it!  You are done.  But no, Vancouver thought it best to accept the on-going barrage, and ………………. hope?  Meanwhile English Bay got shut for a few days as a rocket took out some joggers and their dogs.  Fortunately it was a cold, windy day so less people were out.

Well Islanders got frustrated and resorted more and more to slipping in among the inhabitants of Vancouver and planting bombs, in buildings, buses, among ordinary citizens going about their day.  Island even encouraged it’s own to kill Vancouverites, even if they had to die along with them. You have to be really good at brainwashing to persuade young, healthy people to strap explosives on their own bodies in order to accomplish the disembodiment of random strangers.  But that is what they did.  You may be surprised to know that when Island suicide attackers survived, but were injured while trying to murder, Vancouver doctors and hospitals worked to save their lives.

Islanders caught trying to kill were jailed.  Then Island kidnapped a Vancouver soldier and Vancouver cared so much about him that they released over a thousand Island prisoners, in exchange for the one kidnapped soldier.  WHAT you say?  That’s just crazy!  Good thing this story is a fiction.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_prisoners_released_by_Israel_in_the_Gilad_Shalit_prisoner_exchange

Well the years rolled by and more and more intellectuals, and media and even whole countries began to agree with Island.  They said it was unfair that Vancouver continued to survive and even prosper when Island was trying so earnestly to obliterate them.  Vancouver should not be so intransigent and just let Island  drive them into the Georgia Strait, if that would make them happy.

And the whole world started to seriously criticize Vancouver for it’s obstinacy in not agreeing with Island that they Vancouver, had no right to live.  Some Island sympathizers urged a boycott of all Vancouver art, and any salmon caught and smoked in Vancouver.  And soon any Vancouverite found living among other peoples and in other places found themselves being threatened for being so cruel to Island.

Today a rocket exploded at Robson Square, damaging a lot businesses and killing thirty people.

Two Aggressions.  One is clearly a fable.  Not one, sane person in the whole, free, democratic West would commend Vancouver for enduring, patiently, the first, the second, the third,  the 50th, the 500th, the 5,000th attack from weaker, smaller Island.  Not one.

The point of a fable is to make a point more clearly.  In the recent terrorist attack on Paris the response was an immediate, ….this is war and we will defend ourselves.

Here is a look at real aggression.  Maybe by using our own names and places we can begin to comprehend what Israel endures, and how wrong the UN is to constantly censure Israel for trying to defend itself. Canada must stand against this gang-up at the UN.

As long as I can remember reading about the Holocaust I’ve wondered how millions of decent, ordinary human beings could shut their eyes and ears and minds to the obvious horror of what was happening all around them.  The answer most likely is fear and self-preservation, but the world said, “Never again.”at the end of WW2……. only it is starting to happen again.  We should not turn away this time.
